Childhood dreams are made a dozen,
like rememories on paper
if I don't scratch them
I'll likely lose them.
We glean breath from a past life,
hunched over in a field
of simpler worries,
pulling weeds from gems
dropped for hungry people
who look for more than just a meal
when they eat.
There's barely time to sleep
when there' so much work left.
Old enough I left home
but children come back,
not to roost or rest
but in search of something
long forgotten and never seen,
rifling these memories
shaking out every scrap of meaning
from shelves discarded,
breaking bread with family
who no longer know
the impact they have on a grown child,
one who digs in a fantasia
of history and dark,
looking hard and fast
for a patron saint of benefit
or for a secret truth
or comfort in a warm place
or sometimes just a meal
because we do get hungry.
Grown children of the world
want light to look at,
they want dreams in real life,
or for someone to disappoint
all dreams
before it's too late.
